Earthy, soothing matcha and warming cardamom spice come together in this Cardamom Matcha Latte. It’s a one-of-a-kind treat you’ll enjoy both hot and iced, depending on your preference. That little kick of cardamom spice together with the matcha is unexpected and utterly delicious.

🌟Why Ground Cardamom Instead of Pods

I tested this recipe in two ways: infusing whole cardamom pods into warmed milk and then using ground cardamom directly in the mix.

In the end, I chose the ground cardamom version because it was simpler, worked just as well for both hot and iced variations, and the slight graininess didn’t bother me. I found that letting the spice settle at the bottom of the cup was an easy trade-off for the deeper, more immediate flavor it gave.

🧾 Ingredients in This Recipe

Liquid measuring cup with milk next to two measuring spoons: one with matcha powder and the other with ground cardamom.
  • Matcha powder – Use latte-grade, universal, or culinary-grade matcha powder for this. No need for ceremonial grade; only use that for pure matches with water. My latest go-to matcha is the Maeda-En Universal Grade Matcha.
  • Ground cardamom – You can buy this ready-ground OR grind your own cardamom pods down to a fine powder using a mortar and pestle or spice grinder.
  • Milk of your choice – If you are using dairy milk, my preference is whole. If using non-dairy, my preference is a non-sweetened creamer like oat milk creamer.
  • Sweetener of choice – You can sweeten with sugar, honey, agave syrup, or any of your favorite sweetener options. You can also leave it out, which I usually do.

👩‍🍳 How to Make This Recipe

Here, I’m showing you how to make an iced version but jump to the full recipe notes for instructions on making this a hot latte.

Pro Tip on Sweetness Level

Some store-bought plant-based milk or creamers already contain sweeteners, so be sure to taste your latte before adding any additional sweetener.

  • ¾ cup milk dairy or non-dairy
  • 1 teaspoon sweetener optional
  • 2 tablespoons water

Instructions

Hot Matcha Latte

  • Add hot water to your matcha powder and ground cardamom in a small bowl.
1 teaspoon matcha powder, 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom, 2 tablespoons water
  • Using your metal whisk or bamboo chasen, whisk the matcha and water until the clumps are gone.
  • Bring the milk to a light simmer over the stove or in the microwave. Add your chosen (optional) sweetener to the milk and stir until it's dissolved.
¾ cup milk, 1 teaspoon sweetener
  • Add the warm milk to the matcha and whisk until frothy in a "W" or "M" shaped pattern. Pour into your favorite mug, or enjoy straight from the bowl!

Iced Matcha Latte

  • Add the hot or filtered water to the matcha powder and ground cardamom in a small bowl. Using your metal whisk or bamboo chasen, whisk the matcha and water until the clumps are gone.
1 teaspoon matcha powder, 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom, 2 tablespoons water
  • Add the sweetener to your cold milk. Then, add your milk to the matcha powder mix and whisk until frothy in a "W" or "M" shaped pattern. Pour the whole thing over ice for a refreshing matcha latte.
1 teaspoon sweetener, ¾ cup milk
  • Ice Cube Tip: Pour it over some matcha latte ice cubes so the ice cubes don't dilute your latte down.
