You can easily make this barista-quality matcha latte in 5 minutes at home. I’m showing you how to use a whisk to make a delicious and creamy matcha latte. Plus, you can make it hot or iced, whichever you most enjoy!
❤️ Why You’ll Love This Recipe
You can take this matcha latte to a heartier level by making a matcha oatmeal latte, a mix between a latte and oatmeal.
📝 Ingredients and Substitutions
Matcha powder – For lattes, you only need culinary-grade matcha. If you want something a little fancier, go for a latte-grade. Shop my favorite culinary-grade matcha for this recipe or shop for this latte grate matcha on Amazon. If buying from a grocery store, look out for matcha powders already cut with sugar, as these can be overly sweet and have lower quality tea.
Milk – You can use dairy or non-dairy milk, whatever you like best. I prefer unsweetened oat milk for the added creaminess and frothiness, but other plant-based milk like almond milk or coconut milk all work great.
Sweetener – Choose from simple syrup, maple syrup, white sugar, brown sugar or coconut sugar, honey, agave, or even a sugar substitute like Stevia. I often don’t use any sweetener at all in my lattes.
Some store-bought plant-based milk already contains sweeteners, so be sure to taste your latte before adding sweetener.
🍵 Hot Matcha Latte Recipe
Gather your matcha powder, a cup of milk or non-dairy milk, and your preferred sweetener if you want to add one.
Add 2 tablespoons of hot water to your matcha powder in a small bowl. Using your metal whisk or bamboo chasen, whisk the matcha and water until the clumps are gone.
Bring the milk to a light simmer over the stove or in the microwave. Add your chosen sweetener to the milk and stir until it’s dissolved.
Add the warm milk to the matcha and whisk until frothy in a “W” or “M” shaped pattern. Pour into your favorite mug, or enjoy straight from the bowl!
❄️ Iced Matcha Latte Recipe
Assemble your matcha powder, a cup of milk or non-dairy milk, and your sweetener.
Next, add 2 tablespoons of hot or filtered water to the matcha powder in a small bowl. Whisk the matcha and water using your metal whisk or bamboo chasen until the clumps are gone.
Add the sweetener to your cold milk. Then, add your milk to the matcha powder mix and whisk until frothy in a “W” or “M” shaped pattern. Pour the whole thing over ice for a refreshing matcha latte.
If your latte is too bitter for your taste, it needs added sweetness. Try a squeeze of honey, some sugar, or simple syrup to cut through any bitterness.
Ice Cube Tip: Pour it over some matcha latte ice cubes so the ice cubes don’t dilute your latte down.

This just tastes like oat milk to me. What am I missing? I can’t taste any matcha.
Hi Masterson. The taste of the matcha and the amount it comes through depends on the brand of matcha you are using. Additionally, if you are using oat milk, it would depend on the brand of oat milk. Some have a stronger taste than others. I recommend using one with a mild taste because the taste of the matcha is subtle.
This is such a great guide. I used it for making a matcha latte with my espresso machine steamer and it worked perfectly. Can’t wait to try the others and love your recommendations on the best matcha to use. It’s so hard to pick, so I appreciate the recommendations.
Thank you for the kind words, Justin! I’m glad you’re going to try the different methods. It really is hard to find matcha you love… I’m happy to hear the recommendations are helpful!
I tested this matcha latte recipe this out in a mason jar, and it came out perfectly!
So glad to hear it, Emma… thank you for sharing!
Thanks for this article! And is it possible to make matcha latte using frothed milk from the coffee machine normally used for cappuccino? Add matcha powder to a glass, start milk program to get warm and frothy milk from the coffee machine, and then mix it well with a spoon? Or wouldnt it work?
You are so welcome, Ewa… and yes, it will absolutely work that way!
