Combining a sweet matcha latte with the delicate floral taste of lavender, this lavender matcha latte is the perfect, calming drink for lavender season.

You can make it dairy-free or not, and it’s super simple to make when you’re craving a sweet drink. I find both lavender and matcha so calming, so when they’re put together, it’s the ultimate soothing drink.

This is a simple lavender matcha latte you can serve hot or cold. Be sure to check out this other post if you’re looking for the Starbucks Iced Lavender Foam Oatmilk Matcha which tastes more like cereal milk than lavender.

  • The natural flavor of matcha is slightly bitter and earthy, whereas lavender is sweet, floral, and has mint-like undertones. These flavors are a fantastic match without overpowering each other. Another beautiful matcha flavor combination is this iced chai latte with matcha cold foam.
  • Just as tasty served hot or over ice and with or without sweetener, depending on your preference.
  • It may seem tricky to incorporate lavender, but with dried lavender it’s really easy to grind up and use in a variety of ways. Also, when lavender’s in season, it’s a great time to find it and use it in your recipes.

🧾Ingredients in this recipe

Ingredients for a green tea latte.
  • matcha powder – powdered green tea matcha. You can use culinary grade matcha for this recipe. Here is the brand I usually use and the matcha I’ll buy if I’m ordering on Amazon.
  • lavender simple syrup – you can make your own lavender simple syrup or buy it online. See the note below if you want to use lavender and no sweetener.
  • milk – you can use dairy or non-dairy milk in this recipe. It also works with half-and-half or creamer, if that is your latte preference.
  • sweetener – I don’t usually add sweetener to my tea lattes, but if you usually do, you will want to add it in this recipe. If you want to make your matcha latte a bit sweeter, you can add any of the following:
  • Syrup like simple syrup or maple syrup
  • White sugar, brown sugar or coconut sugar
  • Honey or agave
  • Sugar substitute like Stevia

See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

Pro Tip

If using lavender instead of simple syrup: grind the dried lavender flowers using a mortar and pestle or finely dice the fresh lavender.

👩‍🍳How to Make This Recipe

You can use 5 different methods to make a matcha latte, and all of them work in this recipe: using a whisk or chasen, a blender, shaking it in a jar with a lid, frothing it with a frother or hand frother.

I am going to use a chasen for the matcha and a frother for the milk, but feel free to use your favorite method.

Grind the dried lavender flowers using a mortar and pestle or finely dice the fresh lavender.

Bring the 3/4 cup of milk or non-diary milk and the lavender just barely to a simmer. Add the (optional) sweetener. Froth using a handheld frother. Set aside.

Add 1 tbsp of water to the matcha powder in a bowl. Using your metal whisk or bamboo chasen, whisk the matcha and water until the clumps are gone. Add the hot water and whisk until frothy in a “W” or “M” shaped pattern.

Top with the frothed milk. Pour over ice if you prefer an iced latte.

Notes

Works best with oat milk or whole milk.

Note: For the optional sweetener, I like to use a turbinado simple syrup. To make the simple syrup, add half a cup of turbinado sugar to half a cup of water in a saucepan. Turn the heat to medium and stir until the sugar has dissolved. Remove from the heat and let the syrup cool. Keep your turbinado sugar syrup in a sealed container in the refrigerator, and use whenever you need!
When you buy ceremonial grade matcha, it’s recommended to use only hot water to do justice to the flavor. Culinary grade matcha (use code PPMatcha for 10% off, affiliate link) is perfect for use in recipes or dairy-based beverages like a latte.
