🧾Ingredients in this recipe

A carton of vanilla ice cream in between milk in a measuring cup and a metal measuring spoon with matcha powder.
  • Matcha powder – Use culinary-grade matcha, no need to use any higher quality than that.
  • Milk – Any dairy or non-dairy milk works for this recipe. The small amount of liquid helps create that pourable milkshake texture and mix in the matcha powder.
  • Vanilla ice cream OR matcha green tea ice cream – I provide instructions for both versions so you get the exact right amount of matcha in your milkshake.

🎁 Pro Tip

All store-bought vanilla ice cream will work in this recipe. Just make sure you have one that you like the flavor of because it is a dominant flavor in this recipe.

👩‍🍳How to Make This Recipe

If using matcha ice cream, skip step 1. If using vanilla ice cream, go through all the steps.

This recipe works best using an immersion blender if making just one and a high-speed blender if making more than one.

Pouring thick matcha into a container with vanilla ice cream.
  • Whisk together the matcha powder and 3 tablespoons of milk or non-dairy milk to remove all clumps.
  • Add to a blender.
Blending vanilla ice cream with green matcha in a clear plastic container.
  • Add 3 scoops (1.5 cups) of ice cream to a blender, and blend until just incorporated. Do not over-blend or it will be too runny.
  • If using matcha ice cream, add 3 tablespoons of milk or non-dairy milk to help blend the milkshake.

Note on scoopability & amount of milk

If the ice cream is not scoopable straight out of the freezer, you’ll need to let it soften slightly before attempting to blend it. If the ice cream is super soft, you can get away with mixing the matcha into the ice cream instead of having to blend it.
Add more milk as needed to make it blendable, but be sparing so your milkshake stays thick.

  • Pour into your favorite milkshake glass and add a milkshake straw.

I love anything with matcha but I’ve not been able to find a matcha milkshake on a menu anywhere. This is so easy to make – I used Haagen Daaz plain vanilla ice cream and it was so yummy!
